Maria Grazia Cucinotta originally auditioned for the part of Elektra King, but director Michael Apted didn't think her English was good enough to play her convincingly. Cucinotta gladly accepted the smaller role of the Cigar Girl, as she really wanted to be in a Bond movie. MGM preferred Sharon Stone for the role of Elektra.
