Sean Connery and Christopher Plummer both turned down the role of Gandalf. The two actors had previously appeared together in The Man Who Would Be King. Director John Huston voiced Gandalf in The Hobbit and The Return of the King. Cast member Jack May went on to play Theoden in the BBC Radio adaptation.
