This series was part of a trend in the 1990s, where old animes were modernized for a new generation. However, unlike many other animes that were updated, the creators decided to maintain a retro atmosphere. The characters were designed in accordance with Mitsuteru Yokoyama's 1960s style; the vehicles were taken from the 20th century and reworked (i.e. steampunked); and the mechanical designs fuse high technology and old-school engineering (exposed rivets and hidden weaponry). This set a trend for utilizing the retro aesthetic in animes.
