The scene in which the mob bosses agree not to sell drugs in their own neighbourhoods has been partly responsible for a popular misconception that the American mafia didn't get into drug dealing until the mid-20th century and beyond, and that they had moral qualms about it. There is some truth to this, but men like Vito Genovese and Lucky Luciano were involved in heroin distribution as early as the 1930s and had no qualms about where it was sold or to whom. Luciano himself was jailed as early as 1916 for selling heroin. The two men were responsible for expanding the heroin trade to an international level, and Genovese was later convicted of drug trafficking in 1959.
