Higgins used two Dobermans to guard the estate. The dogs were named "Zeus" and "Apollo", and also referred to as "the lads". For season four, the dogs were to be written out of the show to save costs. Tom Selleck and John Hillerman objected, and the Dobermans remained for the rest of the series.
