Two exterior locations in South Australia were involved in the recreation of the battle of Gallipoli. In his research, production designer Christopher Kennedy did field surveys of the actual battlefield, which has been reforested since 1919, and much of it is now protected ground. Therefore, he recounted: "All the trench sets were constructed in a sand quarry near the coastal city of Adelaide and were designed to match the topography of the landscape on the Turkish peninsula."
