Gene Hackman turned down the role of Col. Nathan R. Jessep because he was busy playing Sheriff Little Bill Daggett in Clint Eastwood's masterpiece Gli spietati (1992). However, Hackman won the Oscar that competed with Jack Nicholson for Best Supporting Actor at 65th Annual Academy Awards (1993).
