With the exception of Koga, Ash had to either do some sort of heroic deed or re-challenge all of the Kanto Gym Leaders to earn his badge. However, this never applied to his Earth Badge, as he never battled against Giovanni himself. Rather, he challenged the Team Rocket trio that had constantly followed him.
