Clyde's self-mutilation while at Eastham Prison Farm was part of a common practice among convicts to escape the grueling outdoor fieldwork. With his slight build, Clyde reasoned he would never survive a 14-year sentence at hard labor. Ironically, a week after cutting off his left big toe, he was paroled by Texas Gov. Ross Sterling on Feb. 2, 1932, in response to his mother Cumie Barrow's incessant pleadings.
