Though not specifically stated, the film apparently is set in Oklahoma Territory, due to the many references to Fort Sill. The film takes place in 1895, six years after the famous Oklahoma land rush. At the time only four of what are now the 48 contiguous states were territories: Utah, which became a state in 1896; Oklahoma, which was admitted in 1907; New Mexico, admitted in January 1912; and Arizona, admitted in February 1912.
