Writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott first got wind of Tim Powers's novel "On Stranger Tides" when they were busy writing Pirati dei Caraibi - La maledizione del forziere fantasma (2006) and Pirati dei Caraibi - La maledizione del forziere fantasma (2006). They didn't include any of the story elements but reckoned it was worth returning to should there be further films in the franchise after the first three initial instalments.
