References are made to Ghostface's rules with regards to "requels" and several of their examples: the later Halloween sequels, the Terminator series, Jurassic Park and the Star Wars sequel trilogy (spanning from The Force Awakens (2015) to The Rise of Skywalker (2019)). All these franchises feature requels in some form: Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills (2021) follow the original movie but ignore all sequels that came in between; Terminator Genisys (2015) and Terminator - Destino oscuro (2019) follow the first and second movie in the series respectively, ignoring the other movies in between; Jurassic World (2015) and its sequel went back to the setting from the first movie, even featuring Dr. Wong from that film; and the Star Wars sequel trilogy doesn't pick up from the previous prequel trilogy, but instead continues from the original trilogy (A New Hope through The Return of the Jedi), even bringing back some of the old actors and utilising the CGI approach of de-aging them in a few scenes. The same is done in this film by bringing back Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), who appears to Sam as a manifestation at his original age from the original Scream (1996). Sam is thus revealed to be the daughter of a former villain, like Rey in Star Wars - L'ascesa di Skywalker (2019) was revealed to be the granddaughter of an old villain.
