The musical cue for the scene where Bilbo finds the One Ring is the same as the corresponding scene in the prologue of Il Signore degli Anelli - La compagnia dell'Anello (2001). By the odd way that the ring behaves when dropped, it seems far heavier than it ought to be (an effect made memorable in the LOTR films, which was achieved using magnets). Although Gandalf notices how Bilbo slips the ring into his pocket, and may even sense something sinister about it, he doesn't realize its true nature yet and is not immediately alarmed. It was explained in The Fellowship of the Ring that apart from the One Ring, 19 other Great Rings were made for the Elves, Dwarves and Men. Gandalf may have always assumed that Bilbo found one of the Dwarven rings that have been unaccounted for; it is only after long research that Gandalf finally realizes it is Sauron's One Ring.
