Many of the scenes were not actually filmed in Derry. The shopping centre where Grandpa Joe goes shopping with his son in law is actually Smithfield shopping centre in Belfast city centre. Some of the outside scenes of the girls houses are filmed in West Belfast, a predominantly nationalist (Catholic) area of Belfast with some staunchly unionist (Protestant) areas. In the episode when Derry girls go driving, they stop for a break to catch their bearings. In fact they are much closer to Belfast than Derry in this scene, on top of the Belfast Hills.
