Producer Arthur Freed purchased the screen rights to 'Jumbo' for $100,000 in 1943 as a possible vehicle for Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney with Wallace Beery and Frank Morgan costarring and Rouben Mamoulian directing. In 1947, the property again came up as a possible film to star Garland or Kathryn Grayson opposite Frank Sinatra or Gene Kelly, again with Mamoulian as director. After another failed attempt to start production in 1952, Freed shelved the project.
