Tony builds a particle accelator in his basement to create the element his father discovered that will power his suit and cure his palladium poisoning. This is not entirely far-fetched according to experts, although key pieces of the accelerator do seem to be missing. The beam that Tony directs with a wrench also wouldn't travel in only one direction. And elements are usually not stable enough to be around more than a few billionths of a second. Not only that, but Tony would be exposing himself to very high, very dangerous levels of radiation in this scenario as well.
