If based on true events, the number of Taliban fighters involved in the attack as shown in the film is misleading and disputed. The screenplay describes: "A solid line of at least fifty Taliban in firing positions on top of the hill above them." However, differing enemy fighter numbers are given in various records, as: in Luttrell's book, on which the screenplay is based, c. 200 is stated; cf: his original after-action report, which gave attacked by 20-35 insurgents. The summary of action for deceased team leader. Lt. Murphy's posthumous Medal of Honor describes the enemy force as numbering "more than 50,": while the official citation puts the number at "between 30 and 40 enemy fighters." Conversely, a military journalist has cited a military intelligence report* stating the Taliban force number at c. 8-10.
