In the original fairy tale transcribed in German by Wilhelm Grimm and Jacob Grimm, the seven characters who were represented by dwarfs in the film were originally monks. It is believed that this change was made to avoid offending either German-speaking or non-Christian movie-goers, neither of which demographic was viewed, at the time, as being able to identify with Christian monks.
