The title role was turned down by Anne Francis (11 years Diane McBain's senior). Francis had recently made two Warner Bros. films - co-starring in Il cielo è affollato (1960) and starring in the low-budget Ragazza per un'ora (1960) - and according to Francis studio head Jack L. Warner personally exhorted her tor play Claudelle Inglish indicating he'd make it financially worth her while. However Francis couldn't get over her dislike of the script.
