The confrontation at Dol Guldur between Galadriel, Saruman, Elrond, Radagast and Gandalf against Sauron is not depicted in the Hobbit novel, but is briefly referenced by Gandalf in the final chapter during his and Bilbo's short stay at Rivendell on their way home; Gandalf explains that after leaving the Dwarves and Bilbo at the edge of Mirkwood, he arranged a convention of the White Council, who then took action against Sauron and drove him away from Dol Guldur. The Appendices of the Lord of the Rings novels elaborate on these events: prior to this attack, the Council already knew about Sauron's presence at Dol Guldur for 91 years, after Gandalf had secretly infiltrated the fortress and learned this from an imprisoned and dying ThraÃn (Thorin's father). Gandalf urged the Council to attack, but Saruman felt that Sauron was not yet powerful enough to warrant such a risky intervention. During the Dwarves' quest to Erebor nearly a century later, Saruman agreed that Sauron was becoming too dangerous. The Council's attack happened about three months before Smaug laid waste to Laketown, and Gandalf was never imprisoned by Sauron. In the movie, this timeline has been compressed significantly and these events run almost concurrently with one another. Sauron is also helped by the Nazgûl, making this the first time that they reveal their true appearance, embodied in their trademark armor.
