In one episode of season 2, the small role of social worker Judy Swain was played by the then-unknown Molly Shannon (who would go on to be a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live). In Shannon's 2022 memoir, Hello Molly!, Shannon reveals that she conned her way into getting a reading for this role. In an attempt to make Hollywood contacts, she and her friend Eugene Pack would call casting agents pretending to be assistants to the playwright and screenwriter David Mamet. "We started meeting everyone--agents at ICM, William Morris. I wanted to be on 'Twin Peaks' so Eugene called the casting director, Johanna Ray, and I actually did get cast on 'Twin Peaks.' Through the Mamet Scam." Shannon met with Ray, who set up Shannon's next meeting--with David Lynch, "which was exactly what I wanted to have happen. Because I would drive my wreck past [Ray's] casting office and say, 'Oh, I really want to be on 'Twin Peaks.' I love that show!'"
