In 1944, Joe Gould, then a Captain in the U.S. Army, was court-martialed on charges of conspiracy to accept bribes for the awarding of Army contracts. He was convicted, fined $12,000 ($171,000 in 2018), sentenced to three years at hard labor, and given a dishonorable discharge.
