The design of Matau was inspired by the comic book superhero, the Rocketeer (adapted into film in Le avventure di Rocketeer (1991)). This is most obvious in his prototype image, in which he adopts a characteristic Rocketeer flying pose. Fittingly, Matau is also a stunt pilot obsessed with flying, and he lived in the past, in a "retro-futuristic" setting.
