Although considerably less dark than both Roald Dahl's novel and the 1990 film, this adaptation stays loyal to the original ending of the book, in which the boy remains a mouse. This was a condition that Dahl's family had insisted upon, since Dahl had been appalled with the changed ending of the 1990 film, so he had actually specified in his will that future adaptations of his works needed to remain faithful to their source. Also, the poster of the movie, showing the Grand High Witch wearing a tight purple dress and raising her arms is directly mimicking the original artwork cover from Dahl's book.
