In the novel the character of Ultraman from Urutoraman: Kûsô tokusatsu shirîzu (1966) played a crucial part in the climax of the story. However the rights of the character were in the middle of a legal dispute so the film replaced it with the Iron Giant from Il gigante di ferro (1999).
