Laurel & Hardy's arrival in Ireland was marked by tragedy, though the actors weren't aware of it at the time. Three Irishmen dived into the sea and swam out to meet the boat when it was about 100 yards from the dock. Forty yards from shore, they slipped beneath the surface and drowned. Their bodies were recovered the next day at low tide.
