Chewbacca receives a gold medal from Maz Kanata just like the medal given to Han by Leia at the end of Guerre stellari (1977). Back then both Han and Luke were awarded medals, but Chewbacca was not (an omission which puzzled Star Wars fans). In a way, he is finally getting a medal that many fans felt he had deserved. This makes little sense in universe.
