In the opening scene on Nibiru, Scotty pointing out the ridiculousness of hiding the Enterprise under an ocean is an allusion to how the creation of the transporter came about. During production of Star Trek (1966), landing the Enterprise on a planet in every episode was deemed too expensive on a television budget, so the transporter was devised as a cost-effective alternative.
