There are many similarities between the character of Derby Milton and real life killer Ed Gein. Gein is known to have been the inspiration for many iconic Hollywood horror thriller characters including Norman Bates of Psyco (1960) and Buffalo Bill in Il silenzio degli innocenti (1991). Derby Milton's fascination with taxidermy echoes that of Norman Bates, while his "preserved room" has undertones of Buffalo Bill's desire to preserve bodies of his victims. Even more notably, is the direct comparison between Derby Milton and Ed Gein in that they were both well known locally as socially awkward small farm town outcasts.
