Colin Firth had recently won his Oscar for playing King George VI in Il discorso del re (2010). The character of Winston Churchill, played by Timothy Spall, also appeared in that film. Gary Oldman went on to win his Oscar for playing Churchill in L'ora più buia (2017), in which Ben Mendelsohn appears as King George VI.
