Thomas Magnum resigned from the U.S. Navy in 1979 after twelve years of service. He said it was because he had turned thirty-three without ever being twenty-three. He then took up work as a private investigator, later moving into the guest-house at Robin's Nest at the behest of playboy author Robin Masters in 1980, where he also served as a security consultant at the estate in exchange for living there rent-free and the use of Robin's Ferrari 308 GTS. There are conflicting dates for Magnum's birthday, with dates being given ranging from 1944 to 1947. 1946 would seem to the most likely year of birth, based on Magnum's being thirty-three in 1979. Magnum was a Navy S.E.A.L. in the Vietnam War and later served in Naval Intelligence ('NIA'/ONI) after a spell in a V.A. hospital. Magnum had lost his younger half-brother in the war and had also believed he had also lost his wife Michelle, who made a few appearances on this show.
