Although the film centers on four lead characters, the script called for extras and background artists in a number of scenes where the group discovers and massacres local Aborigines. These scenes were tense moments for the cast and crew, although actor Damon Gameau (The Follower) observed that the extras and background artists themselves seemed "very, very happy to tell this story". Gameau said: "They basically said to us 'fell free to humiliate us all you want, do what needs to be done because we want this story to be told'."
