(at around 1h 7 mins) Thanos tries to explain to Gamora that the resources of the universe are limited, and that's required a corrective to restore the balance, motivating Thanos to kill half the population of the universe to restore this balance. In the comic The Infinity Gauntlet, a deceased Thanos is resurrected by Mistress Death (Marvel's incarnation of death) with the order to kill the half population of the universe in the belief that there were more people alive than ever have they died, and that it's required a corrective to restore the balance between life and death.
