In an interview in Jan. 2023, Kevin Williamson said he came up with the phrase "walks the dog" in the pilot episode because they weren't allowed to say "masterbate" on TV. He also chose to have Dawson admit he masterbates every morning watching then-Today show host, Katie Couric, because at the time it was Williamson's favorite morning news show and she was a favorite of his. He admitted he didn't get her permission to do it and never heard her comment on it, so he didn't know if she ever saw it or was aware of it.
