In 1981-82, there were relatively few automatic pistols suitable for concealed carry. Around this time several makers and gunsmiths began modifying larger guns for concealed carry. The Devel ASP 9mm based off the S&W Model 39 and the Detonics Combat Master based off the 1911 were 2 successful designs. The ASP had too many expensive modifications and had to be custom made. The Detonics was a semi-custom factory handgun made in Seattle. Both guns would heavily influence future handgun designs. S&W would launch their 3913 series and numerous companies make eventually manufacture 3-3.5" barreled variants of the 1911.
