After Douglas Wilmer declined to star in the second series, the BBC asked John Neville to reprise his leading role from Sherlock Holmes: notti di terrore (1965), with the same result. Next (and final) choice Peter Cushing had played the part in La furia dei Baskerville (1959) for Hammer, and would later reprise it in La maschera della morte (1984).
