While the original Japanese film is very different from the American version, the official winner in every version of the film is Kong. In official press releases at the time, Toho officially declared Kong as victorious. However in a Godzilla encyclopedia book released in the 80s, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka retconned the outcome and declared that the fight was actually a draw. The outcome continues to be a subject of fandom debate.
