Kathy Bates' horrible character in "Coven", Delphine LaLaurie, was a real woman in the 1800s, known for her brutality towards slaves and believed to be a serial killer as depicted on this show. Unlike on this show, she was not killed (or made immortal, obviously) by a mob, but a mob did storm her house and she was forced to flee to France with her family, where it's speculated that she died many years later.
