This is the last film in the franchise in which the idea is floated that the Tall Man exists in a type of illusionary world which only physic people can sense, and that everyone else simply sees a normal funeral director and is oblivious to what is really going on. This particular plot thread had made the first film confusing to audiences, and after Phantasm II later films simply showed the Tall Man as a straight up real-world villain with traditional fight and conflict scenes.
