The vertigo effect, which has since been copied endlessly in later films and series, was created by shooting into a model of the interior of the tower. The camera was on a dolly track and protruding over the end, fitting inside the model while the track remained out of frame. It began at a certain distance from the "bottom" of the tower and was then pulled backwards on the track while the lens was continuously adjusted so that the "bottom" remained in focus. This made the surrounding staircase seem to distort and collapse. Among many other examples, this has been used in science fiction projects to simulate the engaging of warp speed, both in simulated star fields and in live action with actors on a set.
