In the opening title sequence, the first half of the word "Simpsons" ("Simps") is revealed before the second half. According to former show runner Mike Reiss, this is a pun on the word "simps", short for "simpletons", meaning stupid people. Reiss pointed this out in his 2018 book "Springfield Confidential: Jokes, Secrets, and Outright Lies from a Lifetime Writing for The Simpsons".
