Since 1983, when the Roald Dahl source novel was first published, many journalists, book reviewers, children's librarians, and parents have identified anti-Semitic themes and tropes in the story. This interpretation of the story is bolstered by the fact that, throughout his entire life, Roald Dahl was an outspoken and unapologetic anti-Semite, expressing virulently anti-Jewish opinions throughout his career and even in his last interviews shortly before his death. In 2020, not long after this movie's release, the Dahl family issued an acknowledgment of and apology for Roald Dahl's anti-Semitism.
