The soldiers who participated in the atomic bomb tests were sworn to secrecy. Most kept their vow of secrecy even as they suffered and died of radiation-induced injuries in the years that followed. The oath of secrecy was repealed by Congress in 1996, permitting them to receive treatment at VA hospitals for their injuries and to come forward with their stories.
