After the body is found in the wall, Amy asks Travis if carbon dating would tell how old the person was and when they died. This sounded utterly impossible, more like Hollywood science fiction. However, it could be true. In the early 2000s, forensic anthropologists at the University of Arizona took advantage of the increased amounts of radiocarbon in the atmosphere due to atomic testing in the 1950's and '60's. They found that for teeth formed after 1965, enamel radiocarbon content predicted the year of birth within 1.5 years. They also found that year-of-death determinations based on nails were accurate to within three years.
