The historically inaccurate factual errors, such as the cars etc, could be explained away by some things that Alex Drake repeatedly refers to with the spoken dialogue, within the story universe. In season 1, Alex refers to everyone in "1981" as Constructs, as she assumes its her in a coma, based on her analysis of what Sam Tyler reported, so logically, everything else in the series is her "mis-rememberings" of that year.
