Matthew Modine stated in an interview that the character of Dr. Brenner was written as wearing a plaid shirt and jeans. Instead, Modine worked closely with the Duffer brothers (Matt Duffer & Ross Duffer) to craft the character's look, and patterned his hair after Robert Shaw in La battaglia dei giganti (1965) and a pristine suit after Cary Grant's wardrobe in Intrigo internazionale (1959).
