Richard Attenborough had expressed interest in taking over the role of Dumbledore in this film, and had even stated it was the only role for which he would return to acting. Attenborough had replaced Richard Harris years before when Harris withdrew from La grande fuga (1963). That film cast Attenborough opposite William Russell, whose son, Alfred Enoch, plays Dean Thomas in the films. Attenborough's grandson, Tom Attenborough, voiced Harry in several of the video games based on the films, beginning with this one.
