When Captain Willard receives his orders (about 9:30 mark), much of the scene takes place over a table full of food (lunch). Willard never takes a bite of food (or drink) during the entire scene, though it lasts over 9 minutes. This could be symbolic of the unappetizing nature of his orders (which is further reinforced by being given a cigarette, which would normally not happen until after eating).
