George Lucas initially visualized shooting the film in the way that he had shot Il ritorno dello Jedi (1983): with studio scenes at Elstree, and locations in Northern California. That idea eventually faded. However, some exteriors were done around Skywalker Ranch and on location at Burney Falls, near Mount Shasta.
