Burt Reynolds was a candidate to play Superman, but was deemed too recognizable, and not temperamentally suited to the role. If Reynolds had gotten the role, he would have been reunited with Un tranquillo weekend di paura (1972) co-star Ned Beatty! Ironically, Jon Voight was also being considered for Superman at the same time.
